7 February, 1898: Émile Zola is brought to trial for libel in France for publishing his controversial open letter, J’accuse. The letter, which appeared in L’Aurore on January 13th of the same year, was an accusation against the French government, military, and president of unlawfully convicting Alfred Dreyfus, a French officer, of espionage. By publishing J’accuse, Zola brought the highly divisive Dreyfus Affair to widespread international light. Zola was found guilty 16 days later, but fled to England to avoid imprisonment. Alfred Dreyfus was exonerated on July 12th, 1906.
